Mount Horeb New Glarus • Population 7,330 (2013) • Population 2,172 (2010) Fun Facts: Fun Facts: • Mount Horeb began as a small settlement called the “Corners” which became “Horeb’s Corners” and later Mount Horeb. • New Glarus is the head of the Sugar River Trail, which follows an abandoned railroad line for 24 miles to Brodhead. • 1899 saw the first car in Mount Horeb. It was seven feet tall and had a maximum speed of 12 mph. • In 1905, it was proposed that Limburger cheese be “declared legal tender for the payment of all debts and a medium of exchange throughout the district.” • In 1893, the Mount Horeb Lutheran Academy opened; tuition was $29. • Mount Horeb was featured on the second episode of the variety/ game show My Kind of Town. • On the front of the Mount Horeb Middle School is the first vertical sun dial in the United States. • Spotted Cow ale, produced by the New Glarus Brewing Company, is sold only in Wisconsin. • The American trick-taking game of Pinochle is likely descended from the Swiss game Jass, which is played with 36 cards in four suits and is often considered Switzerland’s national card game.
