creams in 2017? Eileen reckons it’s all to do with making skin care more manageable: “The pop- ularity of cold creams is down to an increasing persistent desire to keep things simple and not over complicate your skincare routine. For a lot of people, especially those with sensitive skin, the fewer ingredients you expose your skin too, the better. Using products with a simple formu- lation gives your skin fewer opportunities to become inflamed or irritated.” But can such a simple formula really take on the might of an active face cream or serum? In short, no. A cold cream isn’t designed to fight off free radicals or erase expression lines. It is simply designed to quench and cushion the skin, essentially wrapping it in a bubble of protection so it can make it through the day unscathed. The real progress happens with an antioxidant serum or a peptide-rich moisturiser, but there is room for both in your routine. Winter is the perfect time to add a cold cream to your collection, as they prevent harsh winds and freezing temperatures from weakening the skin and blasting away those more sophisticated ingredients in your serum that are trying to work their magic. So whether you use a cold cream-inspired product to remove your make-up after a long day or to stop your dry, tight com- plexion from literally cracking in the December frost, remember that a little nostalgia is good, as long as your skin is benefitting from it.
