THE IMPORTANCE OF
WATER IN WINTER

B
ack when the days were longer and the
sun was shining round the clock, plain
fresh water was our constant compan-
ion. It was the first thing we grabbed when we
walked in the house, we carried bottles of it
everywhere, and waiters refilled our glasses
without us even having to ask.
But as things cool off we tend to leave our wet
friend behind — we are less likely to drink
“just” water. We get home and turn on the
kettle instead of the tap. At pubs, we relish a
glass of wine by the fireplace or a cosy coffee
with some friends.
It’s hard to crave water when you haven’t
broken a sweat in weeks. Yet, the rules of
biology still apply in the Winter months: your
body needs plenty of water. (Side note: biology
rules apply to sunscreen too — you still need
to wear it daily in the Winter, even if there’s
snow on the ground.)
Failing to drink enough water can leave you
with dehydrated Winter skin, which is usually
dry, scaly and itchy. Your smooth, radiant
Summer skin might take on a dull hue, and an
increase in fine lines and wrinkles is common.
So how can we keep up our water intake
when there are so many other tempting bev-
erages beckoning? To find the answer, we
turned to Donna Brown, water-drinking
enthusiast and owner of Sadona Salon + Spa
in Annapolis, Maryland.
Donna kindly shared six simple tips for staying
hydrated in the Winter months. Here they are,
in her own words:
1. Say YES!
“Whenever you are offered an opportunity to
drink water, simply say yes. At meetings, at
friends’ houses. It was ingrained in me at birth
to always say ‘no thank you’ — to not be a
