Q & A

Ask Yvonne

Every issue , we pose some of your biggest complexion queries to our resident aesthetic nurse and dermatology expert Yvonne Senior , so that she can shed some light on how to best care for your skin . Here , she talks

in-clinic procedures and melasma .
What do I need to know before having a chemical peel ? A chemical peel is an effective way to rejuvenate the skin , helping to remove any minor imperfections and giving the skin a brighter more youthful appearance . Before undertaking the procedure your practitioner will need to know what medications you are taking , especially those that might make your skin sensitive to the sun . They will also need to know of any recent cosmetic procedures you may have had and if you are using any Retinol products on your face , as these can enhance the penetration of the peel . If you suffer from cold sores , they may prescribe an antiviral medication . For the best outcome , you will have to avoid microdermabrasion treatments , using sun beds , waxing and the use of depilatory creams for 14 days prior to your treatment . Your skin also needs to be in good health , so this would be a good time to step up your skin care regimen and maybe include a product with a high concentration of antioxidants like Vitamin C .
Following a peel , sunscreen is your best friend . Avoid unprotected sun exposure and ensure you have an excellent SPF that provides factor 30 or above .
How can I prevent my melasma flaring up ? Melasma is classified as dark patches of discolouration on the skin . Typically , melasma presents on the face and is most noticeable on the cheeks , jawline , forehead and upper lip . It is notoriously difficult to treat as the triggers involve everyday events such as sun exposure and changing hormones , especially high oestrogen birth control . It may not be possible to remove all the triggers such as birth control but sunscreen needs to be applied 365 days a year and during periods of intense exposure , it needs to be reapplied every two hours . Products that can help treat melasma include serums containing Ferulic Acid , as one of the many benefits of this ingredient is that it is a natural skin lightener . You can help further by including a product that contains Retinol in your daily regime . Ideally , you would apply the Ferulic Acid-based product in the morning and the Retinol-based one in the evening .
