neck wrinkles and sagging jowls in women as young as 18 — years before these signs of ageing typically begin to show . Firming neck creams can help by rebuilding and strengthening the neck ’ s thin , vulnerable skin . But , well , looking up more often helps too .
Got this feeling in my body But the most pervasive threat to our skin is the disruptive effect of blue light on circadian rhythms . Circadian rhythms are basically what run the internal clock telling us when to sleep , wake and eat . Long-term disruption of circadian rhythms is linked to serious long-term health problems . In the short-term , the impact is clear : we ’ re under-rested and our skin shows it . Exposure to blue light before bed confuses our brains and makes it harder for us to fall asleep . The problem perpetuates as we lie in bed , unable to sleep : we grab our phones and start scrolling . Suddenly it ’ s past midnight , then it ’ s 6am and the alarm is ringing . And what greets us in the mirror ? Dark circles and puffy eyes ( from exhausted blood vessels
dilating and rising to the surface ) and dull , sallow skin ( sleep is when blood flow shifts to the skin and reinvigorates its colour ). With continued insufficient sleep , we see more wrinkles , because collagen is made while ( surprise , surprise ) we are sleeping . Worse , too little sleep makes our bodies release the stress hormone cortisol which can actually break down collagen . Our skin is missing its chance to heal and renew .
So just dance , dance , dance As Justin Timberlake says , we need to put our devices down and engage our other body parts to save our skin . Conversation doesn ’ t magnify UV rays . Making eye contact with fellow humans avoids neck wrinkles . Delivering a message verbally gives our faces a little break from those HEVs . At night , unwinding with a book under the warm light of a bedside lamp slips right in with our circadian rhythms — lulling us to sleep so our skin can rejuvenate properly . So let ’ s power down the technology a bit . That ’ s a good skin care regime .
