HOW TO ...

Get Motivated For 2017
Remember those New Year ’ s resolutions ? We wrote them on that Starbucks napkin , we tried them for a week , then we crumpled up the napkin . And yet , the colourful blank canvas of 2017 still stretches out in front of us , and we want to get this one right . ( Nobody wants another 2016 , agreed ?) So let ’ s replace those resolutions with plans and get motivated for a fantastic 2017 .
First , put on your 2017 face . Our go-to move to feel empowered for change : updating our skin care and beauty routine . We ’ re guessing that whatever you did this morning — the way you washed your face , prepped your skin and applied your make-up — strongly resembles what you did last month and last year and . . . how far back does that primer go ? Whether you get inspiration from this magazine or see a skin care specialist near you , why not explore new routines , colours and techniques that can be customised for the new 2017 you .
Feed your body and soul . For your soul , this means reassessing the messages you take in every day . Those TV shows that leave you tensed up while you ’ re watching and crying afterwards ? Toss them back into 2016 . Watch something relaxing , aspirational — or at least funny ! Replace any podcasts that offer cynical views of the world with inspiring debates . Read magazines that explore ideas instead of celebs . Choose books with healthy premises . When you jog , take off your headphones occasionally and let nature ’ s sounds fill your head . As for feeding your body ? You already know what to do : more veggies , less junk . Drink water . Lose the fad diets and , for goodness ’ sake , stop liquefying things .
Okay , now cut your feeds . The Facebook feed , the Twitter feed , your curated news feed of current events . All the other omnipresent feeds . They . Are . Consuming . Your . Life .
Stop making goals , start making a plan ! This may sound dangerously similar to a New Year ’ s resolution , but it ’ s not IF you define specific steps to make it happen . Pick a skill you don ’ t have today — the ability to play an instrument , run an eight-minute mile , speak Spanish , win at poker , write a short story — and , importantly , write down your plan for learning it . Google “ deliberate practice ” if you ’ re feeling really motivated . A new interest is invigorating and fulfilling , and just imagine : by the end of the year you ’ ll be able to do this thing you couldn ’ t do today . Plus , after you cut those feeds , you ’ re going to have some magnificent time to fill .
