Are You a Self-Saboteur?
Here's How To Get Out Of Your Own Way
I
t’s inevitable you’ll taste failure in life
from time to time. But what if failure is
happening regularly and you discover it’s
because of — surprise! — you?
“A self-saboteur consciously or unconsciously
ruins any success or progress they make,” life
and mindset coach Aimee C. Teesdale (aimeect-
eesdale.com) tells us. Teesdale, who helps clients
overcome limiting beliefs and self-judgements
in their lives, sees this often.
You might be a self-saboteur if . . .
“You notice yourself going round in circles with
results,” says Teesdale. “Perhaps you manage to
lose weight, then put it all back on again — and
repeat. Or you increase your wealth just to lose
it again, over and over. Or you always get to a
certain point in a relationship then end it, no
matter who the person is.”
The cause, according to Teesdale, is typically a
deep-rooted belief that’s at odds with newfound
success. For example, a pay rise is undermined
by an ‘I don’t deserve to be rich’ mindset. A
meaningful relationship gets cut short by the
thought: ‘If I fall in love, I am going to get
hurt.’ Recognising self-sabotage requires an
honest look at one’s tendencies. “Think about
your history,” she says, “see if you can spot any
repeating patterns.”
How can you get out of your own way?
Teesdale suggests answering the following
three questions:
•
•
•
As a child, what did I hear people say in
relation to this area of my life?
What did I see in this area of my life?
What did I feel or experience in this area
of my life?
“When you identify where the belief came
from,” says Teesdale, “you can forgive yourself
for having once thought that way. Then declare
something new, something that is congruent
with the success you want. The more you believe
it, the more you will maintain it.”
Is self-sabotage a chronic condition?
It doesn’t have to be. “People are becoming
more consciously aware that we are driven
by subconscious drives, motives, and beliefs,”
Teesdale says. “They’re realising it is possi-
ble to take ownership over our lives, not be
stuck with how we’ve wound up. We can
instead become who we want, living the way
we want.”
