With flaxseed, wild cherry, and six other
superfoods, the Defense Nightly Reconditioning
Moisturizer from Paula’s Choice is another
option for protecting skin during those late-
evening scroll-fests. With a blend of ingredients
designed to boost skin’s defences overnight, this
antioxidant-rich moisturiser is said to create a
shield that will “protect from environmental
aggressors such as HEV/blue light emitted
from smartphones.”
As PRIORI Adaptive Skincare points out, UVA
and UVB are the primary causes of sun damage,
but that blue light shouldn’t be ignored.
According to PRIORI, “Lesser known factors,
such as blue light and infrared radiation can
also penetrate the atmosphere and affect our
skin more than we know.” Today, PRIORI adds,
people are exposed to blue light from electronics
up to 12 hours a day; this is why their Tetra
fx250 Broad Spectrum SPF50 sunscreen contains
Carnosine, Soliberine, and Sepia Melanin. They
say that this blend reduces infrared-induced
cellular damage, while Soliberine blocks 43%
of HEV blue light emitted by everyday elec-
tronic devices.
Beyond Skincare
Exposure to blue light too close to bedtime also
affects the skin by making it hard for you to
fall asleep, leading to puffy eyes, dark circles,
bad texture, and other skin issues that result
from inadequate rest. But that’s a secondary
effect. It’s the direct impact of blue light from
indoor products that’s getting more attention
these days.
Other industries are finding ways to help con-
sumers protect themselves against the endless
exposure to blue light. Screen protectors that
filter out blue light are now readily available,
and most devices have settings that allow users
to change to ‘night mode’ which is a warmer,
less blue light. And, also, never forget the old
‘turn off the devices more often’ strategy. Your
skin, and your mind, will thank you for it.
