When and how started the idea of hand paint skateboard decks?
Well what happened is that my boyfriend broke his
board in half on a session one time. And after he took
the trucks off he wanted to throw the pieces away,
but then I had the idea to try and paint on them and
see how it feels. I liked the idea of taking something
that would otherwise get thrown out and turning it into
something with value. I loved it, so the next thing was
getting my hands on a new blank board and try to
paint on that. Again, it just felt awesome (even though
looking back on my first attempts now is kind of funny).
Skateboarding has been in my life for quite some time
now. It inspires me, being such a powerfully creative
force, so I couldn’t think of a better medium to let my
ideas flow onto than the skateboard. I guess I find a
deep similarity between skateboarding and visual arts...
Like you know, every skater has their own way of doing
it and bringing forward their own version of it – that’s
the way I feel about creating visuals. It’s all about being
creative and having the freedom of expressing your own
perspective. I guess there’s always going to be people
that don’t dig it, but as long as there’s somebody who’s
had a positive reaction to something I created, I’m more
than happy.
