Group 2 – Language Acquisition IB English Language B (Higher and Standard Level) Entry Requirements Where next? No additional English requirements above those required for entry to Gresham’s. English Language B is an additional language-learning course designed for non-native speakers with some previous learning of English Language. WHAT WILL I STUDY? The main focus of the course is on language acquisition and development of language skills. The syllabus approaches the learning of language through meaning. Through the study of the core and the options at SL and HL, plus two literary works at HL, students build the necessary skills to reach the assessment objectives of the language B course through the expansion of their receptive productive and interactive skills. HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED? The HL course is examined at the end of the 2 year linear course and consists of 75% External Assessment and 25% Internal Assessment. External Assessment: Paper 1, Writing (1hr 30mins, 25%), Paper 2 (50%) Listening comprehension (1hr) and Reading comprehension (1hr). Internal Assessment: Individual oral assessment (25%). 41
