Where next? The qualification inspires students to engage with visual culture in many forms and with a new
global perspective. Students will gain an understanding of the relationship between art and
society; art historical terms, concepts and issues; the influence of cultural and political factors,
differences in materials, techniques and processes in both art and architecture over time.
History of Art is a well-respected qualification with the academic credentials for university.
History of Art is offered as a Single or Joint Honours degree at most universities, including Oxford
and Cambridge. There is a rich variety of career paths including education, journalism, curating,
sales, interior design, stylist, art restoration and conservation, and art therapy.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
o Year 12 Paper 1 : THEMES
Visual analysis (of painting, sculpture and architecture)
Two Themes are studied in depth: Nature in Art and Identities in Art
Year 13 Paper 2 : PERIODS
Two Periods are studied in depth:
Power and Persuasion: The Baroque in Catholic Europe (1597-1685)
Brave New World: ‘Modernism’ in Europe (1900-1939)
HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?
The course consists of two written exams each of 3 hours, sat at the end of the two years.
Each exam is worth 50% of the A level grade
