According to the IIHS, the moderate overlap test illustrates the structural integrity of a given vehicle better than the U.S. government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s full-width crash test, which focuses more on the performance of the restraint system. But the IIHS didn’t stop with the moderate overlap crash test. “In 2003, we added the side impact crash test. Then, the next year, the evaluation of head restraints to see how they protect occupants from whiplash in rear-end crashes,” says Zuby. “In 2009, we added roof strength testing to see if cars were protecting their occupants in a rollover crash and, most recently, we added the small overlap crash test.” To be at the leading edge of automotive crash safety testing, Zuby says the IIHS is constantly looking at realworld data reported by police departments in the U.S. The IIHS also looks a
