Issue 9: Encouraging Cultural Creators in the Singapore Tamil Literary Arts Scene Recommendation 4: Tweak the Objectives of National Competitions • Singapore Youth Festival (SYF): Most of the SYF performances are dance-oriented. There are very minimal chances for other forms of Indian/Tamil arts to be displayed. • Expand SYF to allow for Indian dance, singing, music and instrumental performances. • SYF could consider having a competition for individuals, where talented Tamil individuals can put forth their talents, even though that CCA is not present in school. E.g. playing the tabla, dholak, mirdangam, etc. • Singapore Writers Festival (SWF): SWF can take a more active role in schools to engage students. • SWF could consider organising a series of workshops/recruitment to train interested students in writing. This will increase the pool of local Tamil writers. • Promote online publishing of books e.g. Amazon’s Kindle to make written materials more accessible.
