MuScent Q & A

What is MuScent?

MuScent is the missing connection between Music and Scent.

Explain further please!

Humans enjoy 5 Senses; Sight Sound Smell Taste Touch. We are associative beings and use our senses with memory recall. For instance, a certain smell brings back memories of Mom cooking for the Holidays. Music and memories are like a treasure chest we dive into whenever we want and we feel those memories years later just as keenly as if for the first time. I believe scent is powerful in evoking pleasurable memories – or not so much lol I smell Brussel Sprouts cooking and well, it’s not pretty!

So how do you put the two together with MuScent?

A band, a musician, a club, offers their fans merchandise with killer T’s, the latest CDs, Posters and so on to remember excellent times. MuScent is another way for fans to keep on rocking; for instance, at your fav club you buy a TShirt wear it and everyone knows you are a Tail Gun fan. Someone says “Dig your shirt man, where’d you get it?” You buy Leona X’s latest CD blasting your windows out cruising the streets and others want to know “Hey! Who is that?!” MuScent offers signature fragrances exclusive to a particular band or musician or club so when you purchase merc to remember the killer time you had at Count’s Vamp’d – again for instance – you now have scent choices to enjoy and recall that night Thigh Voltage brought the house down.

How do you make that happen?

Interested parties hit me up for some testers. We meet up, I ask some questions, get a feel for what they dig and then I go back to my Krafty Kitchen and blend up 5 to 10 tester fragrances for them to pick out what evokes the spirit of their music, their style. Typically there are a couple blends for the guys, a couple for the ladies and a couple blends that everyone enjoys. The blends come in .5oz Amber Glass Bottles with little dripper spouts cuz you know, a little dab’ll do ya! The blends are part of available merchandise on the pertaining website. That’s the easiest way. This is new, never been done before, I get that – so purchasing tester vials of this and that would be the best way to go and then what you love you go back for the .5oz bottle. And sure, 1oz is also available.

So I buy a blend, how do I get it?

I get the orders, I fill them, I ship them. Blends are bottled fresh; they don’t sit on shelves collecting dust. That way inventory and what’s popular are really clear. Reviews are key not only to me but the host site, the band or musician or club, the blend or blends pertain to. What’s popular or not. I’m easy, I have a set price for wholesale doesn’t matter who you are. Mark-up is the other guys bivouac.

How did MuScent come about?

I’ve been blending fragrances most of my Life, but professionally for 16 years. I’m a freak when it comes to smell, I smell everything. I know instantly if I like it love it or, not so much. I’m an old hippie chick from the days when the air was filled with Patchouli, magical bubbles and flowers in everyone’s hair. My favorite memory growing up was hitting Paramount Imports in San Jose CA, still there and still amazing by-the-way. All the colorful posters, the jewelry, the clothes, the albums, and the smells OMGosh! I’d spend all my allowance on Incense and tiny scented oil bottles. That was when I first started blending; Patchouli Sandalwood Amber and African Violets, my signature scent, made my Mother gag but hey lol. At home, listening to Janis or Jimi or The Doors, painting my room with psychedelic colors, burning my sticks and blending oils, that’s my treasure chest of memories. I’d sell the oils for a couple bucks to my besties; together we smelled like a scented rainbow lol So music and scent and beloved memories … MuScent. What it is, has been, and shall always be, baby!

Last month while on break from classes at The Art Institute I had the opportunity to shoot several local bands at the Beauty Bar, among them was Circa: Sik who was a ton of fun to shoot. I do love a challenge and their bassist, James Barry gave me a run for my money. After their set I had the opportunity to talk with him and showed him some of the shots I had captured when he revealed to me that whenever he sees a photographer trying to take his photo he likes to just move and continue playing. So imagine me and my camera chasing James on the stage on the floor, on top of the bar and even outside playing his bass guitar.

Following the show, I reached out to James and to talk to him about him and the band.

Formed somewhere around 2006, Circa: SIk is a Las Vegas and Tacoma, Washington based band, each member possessing their own tastes in music and ideas on writing.

How many albums do you currently have?

We have two full length albums "C1S1" and "Onconomy", both available on Bandcamp, Zia Record Shop, i-Tunes, Spotify and other online retailers. "Onconomy" was really a concept album about Cancer. The word Onconomy comes from Oncology and economy. The study of cancer and the money for the treatments not the cure in other words. KFW and Omniom lost members of their family during the writing and recording of that album. "Anti-Oxygen" from the album "Onconomy" and has been played on Komp 92.3’s Homegrown Show. Here’s a link to the video , the man blowing fire in the video is our good friend Henry aka Elvis aka Bigfut. He also passed away from cancer on Christmas last year. We'll never forget him and his support to us and the local scene.

What was the craziest thing that has happened to the band while on tour

Well we are flying to Washington for a series of shows and we have a sticker with Bin Laddins face on it wearing one of our shirts. Obviously, it’s not him in the picture. So as usual we are late to go get to the airport and we have problems checking all the bags onto the flight. We condensed our march with all of our personal things. In a rush we set the old merch box next to the trash can without throwing it in. We ran to our gate just to make it on in time! I don’t like flying so our current drummer at the time and myself took about 6 shots to tame the nerves. I had to piss So bad! After sitting in the plane on the terminal for about 20 min. I jumped up and ran to the restroom. Half way done and a heavy pounding on the door came out of nowhere. I said i was almost done. The voice called out my first name and demanded I exit the restroom immediately! I open to find a Metro cop with hand on his gun waiting to escort me out of the plane! They found our merch box with the Bin Laddin head stickers on it, rewound the cameras and played detective on which flight we were getting on. We missed our flight and had to get all our stuff rechecked and bomb swiped. I was glad they didn't move to cavity search! The head of the TSA was called down on his day off to question if we had seen the man on the sticker. That was weird; thought he was dead we said. There’s a video of this event on YouTube called Cirka:Sik VS The TSA.

What are the bands plans for 2019?

We have our third full length written and are getting that ready for the studio. Playing shows on the West Coast is always an option. We're getting ready for Cali next week! I'm looking to hit some stages we haven't played yet like Brooklyn Bowl and some Summer festivals.

A big thank you to James Barry for taking out time to talk with me about Cirk-Sika, and he and the band would love any band that puts on a great live show like us.

“If Cirka:Sik is not the best live band playing that night I didn't do my job”.
