Skip the shampoo? Ewww!
I know. I know. But wait. Let me explain. “Co-washing” or “conditioner washing” is a method
of cleansing the hair and scalp using a conditioner instead of using a shampoo. In order to
break down oils, dirt, and product build up on hair, the typical shampoo contains some of the
same tough cleansing agents that are found in many laundry detergents, toilet bowl cleaners,
car washes, upholstery cleaners, and other multi-purpose household cleaners. Compare the
ingredients list of your typical shampoo to a bottle of household cleanser and see if you can find
the words: “sodium lauryl sulfate” or “sodium laureth sulfate” on most or all of them that are not
promoted as “natural cleansers”. These sulfates are excellent in their cleansing and foaming
properties.
