Further into the winter and after all the holiday hoopla is finished, why not take trip to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum right here in Hamilton? How long has it been since you have visited? The Warplane museum is world renowned, and it still boasts all that vintage aircraft and the famous Lancaster – one of only two air-worthy Lancaster aircraft left in the world. Lovingly looked after and restored by volunteers; in fact, the whole museum is run by volunteers and it’s a great place to spend a morning or afternoon. You can also buy a flight on some of the vintage aircraft! It’s close to home, with so much history worth exploring. www.warplane.com Also close by, there’s Josmar Acres in Lynden (part of Flamborough), a year-round farm market and garden centre that’s worth the daytrip visit. There you can get some holiday brittles, fudge, maple candy, local cheeses, as well as pre-cut trees, boughs, wreaths, locally-grown produce, pies, fresh farm eggs and a multitude of country gifts. Plus, for those musically inclined, there is a piano just ready to be played! Or, if you are really lucky, one of the staff might just play something for your group! It’s a wonderful getaway sure to lift your winter spirits. (closed Sundays) www.josmaracres.com Looking for a northern feel without the drive? Valens Lake Conservation Area, also in Flamborough, has an amazing skating rink that will bring you back to your youth! Skate through the trees at the new 425 metre long outdoor skating loop, encompassing the Cedar Loop of the whole campground! Enjoy a skating experience through the forest and warm up by a fire as you strap on your skates. This is something new and unique, and it’s open all winter long. Here at Valens Lake, you can also try your hand at ice fishing – what a wonderful way to experience something new this winter! conservationhamilton.ca/valens-lake There are many local museums open over the winter season. Erland Lee Museum in Stoney Creek is not only nearby, but it’s the birthplace of the Women’s Institutes – and worth the visit this winter. The white board and batten house is an example of Gothic Architecture, and it exhibits household artifacts and furniture circa 1790 to 1930 – many of them original to the six generations of the Lee family who lived there. Many people – including me – volunteer their time on the weekends in order to provide tours and workshops to the public. www.fwio.on.ca/erland Over those dreary cold and dark winter months, just remember to get out and do something, even for a few hours a day...
