STIRRING MY SOUL
TO SING
Stirring My Soul to Sing, Overcoming ADHD Through
Song, (published by Word Alive Press) is an autobiography
by W. Ian Walker, a trained arts administrator and
fundraiser, musician, chorister and choral conductor.
In this book,
Ian recalls a career
spanning over 40
years of choral and
performance with
some of Nor th
America’s greatest
musicians and artists,
while overcoming
Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD).
Although Ian was
identified as having a
learning disability in
the early 1970’s, it wasn’t until the spring of 1996 that he
was formally diagnosed with ADHD. He then undertook
Christian counseling and delved into a study of ADHD
to deal with overcoming obstacles often associated with
the disorder – such as verbal abuse, school bullying, poor
academic standing, employment instability, financial
hardship, and divorce.
In his 236 page book, Ian shares how his strong
personal faith, combined with his passion for vocal and
choral music, became the cornerstone of his success in
overcoming ADHD. In the book, Ian offers insight into
a life and relationships influenced by ADHD and shares
the joys and sorrows of adapting to it.

SOLVING
MOBILITY ISSUES
– By Colin Gates
M any seniors have mobility concerns which can also mean
bathing is an issue. Falls are the leading cause of injury for
seniors, and according to Statistics Canada, over 50 percent
of falls occur in the home (many occurring in the bathroom),
accounting for 95 percent of all hip fractures.
When concerns about slips and falls become commonplace
it’s time to consider which lifestyle changes to make.
Safe bathing is a welcomed solution
• Walk-in tubs eliminate the greatest obstacle to safe bathing
– the process of getting in and out of a slippery tub.
• Walk-in tubs have swinging doors to replace the 20-inch
step needed to get into traditional bathtubs, with one short,
safe step. This significantly reduces the risk of falling for
those with limited mobility.
• Features such as slip-resistant flooring, grab bars, and a
raised seat, means all the controls, including the shower
wand, are within easy reach.
• There is minimal wait time, as filling the tub takes less than
four minutes, while drainage takes less than two minutes.
• As an added feature, these unique tubs provide joint pain
and muscle tension relief through the benefits of seated
hydrotherapy.
Independence and dignity are restored
A walk-in tub also means that seniors and others with
mobility issues no longer have to wait for personal support
workers or family members to bathe them.
Though getting used to a different way of bathing can take
some time, the peace of mind provided is worth it. •
