One theory for the development of SAD is that the increased hours of darkness disrupts the brain chemicals and affects mood. SAD can cause feelings of depression, trouble sleeping, weight loss/poor appetite, or weight gain (cravings for/over-indulging in carbohydrates), and agitation or anxiety.
