HIDDEN CASH
– By Suzanne Soto-Davies
H e’s related to me, but I can’t tell you who he is because
of what I’m about to share.
He did very well during his career, and now that he’s retired,
he probably has a lot more money than he knows what to
do with. He receives three different pensions, from three
different countries; his house is paid for, he always carries
money around in his wallet – a lot of it.
After he suffered a stroke a few years back, he was left with
Aphasia – that’s a form of brain damage a person can be left
with after a stroke or accident. It makes it difficult for some
to understand speech or conversation, and for others it’s
challenging to express themselves. He cannot clearly express
himself, especially when it comes to money. He will tell you
“ten thousand” instead of “ten dollars.”
He lives alone, and quite far away from us. He likes it that
way, but for us it’s a constant worry – about his health, about
his eating habits, and wondering if someone is ripping him off.
I’ve read many stories about people hiding money under
the mattress, and I always wonder why they wouldn’t trust in
putting the money in the bank? (With CDIC –Canada Deposit
Insurance Corporation– at least 100,000 of your money is
insured, right?) But not him: He keeps money hidden here
and there. Through the years publishing Silver & Gold, I’ve
met many people who do this too – carry large amounts of
cash and hide much of it in their homes... Why is that?

When I published my new WISH Workbook (see inside
back cover page), this was one of the areas I was missing on
the first edition: Cash. I learned how important it is for people
to write down whether or not you have hidden cash, and
where it is. Let’s face it, if something happens to you – what
happens to your stash of cash? 243 Haldimand Hwy #54, P.O. Box 610 Cayuga, ON, N0A 1E0

This man in my life has cash, and we know where he keeps
it because he has told us. We also know what he wants to do
with it, which is amazing. That’s his cash and it’s up to him to
spend it, save it, give it away, donate it. It’s wonderful to age
with money, but it’s also important to let others know where it
is... Maybe it’s time you considered a WISH Workbook too? • Léony deGraaf Hastings, CFP, EPC
