Senior-Focused Foot Care Available Poor circulation? Do not ignore leg pain! Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is caused by a blockage or narrowing of the arteries in the legs when fatty deposits, called plaque, build up. This plaque causes the arteries to harden and narrow, called atherosclerosis, which results in a reduction of blood flow to the legs and feet – commonly referred to as ‘poor circulation’. PAD occurs most often in the arteries in the legs, which is why early signs and symptoms often occur on your feet and legs. When blood is not flowing properly throughout the body, something as simple as walking or climbing a flight of stairs can become difficult and cause fatigue. Smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity and Diabetes increase the risk of PAD. Symptoms of PAD may include fatigue (tiredness or pain in the legs, thighs or buttocks), foot or toe pain, and skin wounds or ulcers on the feet. PAD can be treated with lifestyle changes, medicines, and surgical procedures if it becomes severe. Treatments may include programs to stop smoking, and/or medication to control high blood pressure and lower cholesterol. Strict blood sugar control is also needed for Diabetics. Exercise is extremely important for better blood circulation: Walking, swimming, or any type of movement for at least 20-minutes a day is beneficial to increase circulation in the legs and the entire body. Exercise itself can help to lower blood pressure and high blood sugar in Diabetics. A healthy diet will also lower cholesterol and prevent high blood sugar levels. Speak with your medical doctor or nutritionist to ensure you are not eating things that can increase your risk for PAD. Do not ignore leg pain! Discuss any leg or thigh pain with your Chiropodist or medical doctor, since it could be a warning sign of a more serious disease such as PAD. With early detection we can often treat risk factors to slow the progression of the disease and decrease the chances of heart attack and stroke.
