DENTAL IMPLANTS
– By Peter Iapichino DD
M ore and more people today are considering the idea of
replacing their present dentures with dental implants. One
of the most common reasons for this, is that some folks
presently have loose fitting dentures allowing food to collect
underneath, and in some cases, causing soreness in the mouth.
Some have tried replacing their dentures, but they never
seem to fit as their permanent teeth did.
So what is a dental implant? A dental implant is a small
dental “post” that is placed in the jawbone as an artificial
substitute for the former natural tooth root. This post provides
a strong foundation on which to properly secure partial or
full dentures.
Dental implants are the closest possible replacements for
former natural teeth, and certainly can go a long way to
restoring a former natural smile. Dental implants have a long
clinical history with excellent success rates. Th ey can be used
to replace a single lost tooth or the entire denture.
Some benefits of dental implants include;
• Improved ability to eat foods that up until now, wearers
have tried to avoid
• Increased denture stability and a large decrease in denture
discomfort
• Full & partial dentures
• Dentures over implants
• Same-day relines & repairs
• Immediate dentures
and soft liners
• All insurance plans accepted
• Free consultation

• Improved self-esteem, digestion and nutrition, from being
able to eat all foods
Having dentures secured with dental implants, means
more stable dentures that feel more like former “real teeth”.
By having dentures properly secured, one can now enjoy a
much greater variety of foods which can be chewed effectively
without any fear of dislodging dentures. Often, harder foods
can now be reintroduced to the diet, since chewing them
effectively is no longer an issue. Many patients indicate that
their dentures now feel much more comfortable, and they no
longer feel that their dentures will “slip” when speaking or
laughing. As a result they enjoy more comfort and confidence
when they smile.
Anyone considering the idea of dental implants should
first begin the process by having a complete and thorough
discussion with their dentist or denturist, to learn as much
as possible about the process and actual benefits that will
accrue. Discussions should include the realistic time frame
for this process, a complete outline of the costs involved, and
answers to any other questions or concerns that one may
have. After all, you want to make sure that dental implants
are right for you.•
