SENIORS MOMENTS

– By Don Crossley
We continue to hear the news that various community newspapers continue to close down , after being in business for many , many years . Some of these include the dailies for such communities as Niagara Falls and Barrie .
We have always felt that one of our greatest opportunities to participate in the democratic process , is through community newspapers and similar publications , such as Silver and Gold magazine .
We believe these publications play a vital role in providing citizens with the news coverage they are interested in learning more about within their respective communities . Unlike the large dailies who tend to concentrate their coverage on the news of the world , these community publications provide the readers with in-depth coverage of local news and events which impact the daily lives of each and every citizen of that community .
Where else would you be able to read about the latest developments concerning your city and regional councils , school boards , and local organizations ? Local reporters and columnists can provide the in-depth coverage required , because they reside in the community and have a personal understanding of the people and issues involved .
For example , when I write about issues affecting seniors , it is because for many years Joan and I have been members and volunteers at the Burlington Seniors ’ Centre , where we have literally met hundreds of seniors , many of whom have become our good friends .
As a result of our involvement , we are in contact with seniors on an almost daily basis , and this is one of the main reasons why , for over 10 years , we have been writing a column entitled ‘ Seniors Moments ’ in the Burlington Post . This column allowed us to assist many people in our community with resolving some of their concerns , while keeping alive many of the cherished memories of Burlington dating back to the 1940 ’ s and 50 ’ s when it was a totally different community than it is today .
We have had readers from as far away as British Columbia and UK contact us to tell us how much they enjoyed reading our column with its wonderful memories , and at the same time , passing information along about the Burlington they remember , to share with other readers .
Were it not for these community publications , none of this would be possible .
So let us be sure that we patronize community publications such as Silver and Gold and the Burlington Post , so they will continue to exist and be strong for many years to come , and remain the “ Voice of our Community ”.•
