All participants must, independently, be able to:

- Follow verbal and visual instructions.

- Enjoy being on a boat all day in all types of weather, tolerating long periods of time in the sun, cold, wind, and/or rain while remaining sedentary to make observations.

- Tolerate varying temperatures that are on the whole cool.

- Comfortably traverse narrow passages and steep stairs on the boat.

- Remain balanced and agile to cope with the constantly varying motions of the vessel, the need to lean over for clipping and unclipping yourself to safety harnesses, and for bracing against waves.

- Have one hand always available to hold onto the boat.

- Observe small dorsal fins that are located at long distances, and hear high-frequency calls to be able to undertake acoustic monitoring.

- Comfortably remain static in one position for at least one hour at a time to collect observation data.

- Be comfortable wearing heavy-duty waterproof outfits while equipped with a lifejacket and harness, which must be worn at all times on deck. This equipment can tend to feel heavy and restrictive.

- Feel fit enough to comfortably climb a crow’s nest and partake in rope hauling and hydrophone deployment as required (optional activities).
