Research Expedition Brief Expedition Overview | Page 7

Why join us?

Hebridean seas are under increasing pressure; busy, noisy and polluted. Scotland’s whales and dolphins exist in a fragile state, threatened by a range of environmental, climatic and man-made stresses. Yet we still understand very little about our marine environment or the species which inhabit it.

There have been significant changes in the Scottish west coast marine environment over the last two decades. HWDT research has identified that the consequences for whales and dolphins are already apparent.

Cetaceans are an indicator species – sitting at the top of the marine food chain - by studying their health we can monitor the overall health of Hebridean seas. By participating in an expedition, you will be safeguarding the Hebridean marine environment for future generations.  7

Alongside physically joining us on board, the financial contribution you make ensures the project is sustainable and can continue for many more years.  The money raised covers the cost of the monitoring work on board Silurian – you can be assured that it all supports the project.

It costs just over £1,000 per day to operate a research expedition
