is communication: understanding their individual needs and then somehow putting all the pieces together. collaboration with the production departments, I identify the aspects of the play that will create the biggest obstacles. Having a plan and identifying the challenges provides a freedom to focus on the performance elements in the rehearsal process and set a basis for problem solving as new issues arise. And I also make lots of paperwork, lots of phone calls, emails, etc., so everyone shows up on the first day and has the information they need.

What attracted you to Stage Management? Whenever I teach a Stage Management class I always say that being a Stage Manager is like being captain of the Enterprise on Star Trek. You’re on a grand adventure, discovering new places with a team of experts and you get to organize the whole thing so that the director’s goals are achieved. It’s the most exciting thing. Describe a typical collaboration with the playwright, director, and actor. Every director has their own vision and idiosyncrasies, every design team works in their own way and every cast has their particular peculiar methods of approaching the work. Part of my job is to analyze all that and figure out the best way to communicate to all of them. The hub of any Stage Manager collaboration
