HF: He explores the darkness of the characters, but they’re also funny. That kind of alcohol-induced behavior is outrageous. In small towns like Wharton, there was a lot of drinking and stuff going on. There were two categories: people who didn’t do any of that and then a lot of spoiled rich people, quite frankly, that did a lot of that. Underneath it all, there’s such loneliness. MW: When audiences come to see this play, they’re going to experience it as one of Horton’s most outrageous comedies and one of his darkest, most poignant plays. I think Horton is vividly and acutely looking at the breakdown of American society; what we used to rely on as being the bones of a community, the ties that used to bind families together, can’t sustain people anymore. The Old Friends is about a number of unhappy marriages, which lead characters to medicate themselves through alcohol and sex.
