Alors qu ’ onze membres s ’ ajoutent aux fondateurs en 1871 , il faut attendre l ’ année suivante avant que ne soit tenue la première réunion officielle . Le premier Temple ( aujourd ’ hui nommé centres Shriners ), « Mecca » ( La Mèque ), ouvre alors ses portes à New York avec Fleming comme premier potentat .
La fraternité a toujours été populaire . Elle passe de 43 membres en 1875 à 55 000 membres répartis dans 82 temples 25 ans plus tard . Contrairement à la croyance populaire , l ’ organisation n ’ est pas en lien avec la communauté arabe >

The origins of the fez are unknown . Traces of similar hats were found in ancient Greece and Byzantium , as well as in Turkey . Contrary to popular thought , there is no etymological connection between the fez and the city of Fez in Morocco , although many Moroccans wear this kind of hat they call “ tarboosh ”. “ Fez ” is actually the word used by the Ottoman Turks who , in the early nineteenth century , modernized the uniform of their army and imposed the wearing of the fez there for members of their civil service who until then had worn turbans . Often brought back as a souvenir by Western travelers visiting the Middle East , this headgear was chosen as the official hat of Shriners . Worn now for several generations , the Shriners fez is red with a black tassel .

While eleven new Shriners were received in addition to the two founders in 1871 , it was only the following year that the first official meeting was held . The first temple ( now a Shrine Centre ), “ Mecca Temple ,” opened its doors in New York with Fleming as Imperial Potentate .
The fraternity has always been popular . It has went from 43 members in 1875 to 55,000 members in 82 temples 25 years later .
