GOLFING GOLD: Team Shrewsbury Elite Gold Athlete, Jan Prapassarangkul (Y13), has penned a new chapter in her sporting career by signing a National Letter of Intent to play Division I golf at the University of Illinois where she will be reading Computer Science.

Winner of both the AJGA Junior Open (US) and the recent Hong Kong Ladies Open Amateur Golf Championship, Jan has also received a decoration from His Majesty the King for her achievements in international golf. Yet she remains an incredibly humble and modest person, attributing much of her success to continual support and encouragement given to her by her parents.

MERCY MISSION: On 14th of October, the Community Service and Fun “You-Time!” activity group went on a trip to Klong Toey, Bangkok, to visit to the Mercy Centre and to help some of the orphans and other children that are cared for in the Centre.

Firstly we were given a tour of the centre and its Exhibition room, where we learned about some of the things the centre does to help the poor and needy, before moving on to the centre’s shop, which sells items such as bracelets, pillow cases and shirts that are all made by the children there. Some of us were lucky enough to buy bracelets.

Then we got into groups to play board games and card games, and do some coloring in with the children. Some of them had really good art skills! We also taught them some English by singing songs like ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’, and we shared some of the snacks that we had brought with us. The children were really well behaved and they looked really happy with all the things we gave to them. As a treat Mr. Fidge gave us a delicious pack of caramel popcorn!

Jan has been an incredibly important part of the golf team throughout her time at Shrewsbury International School. In her younger years she enjoyed success alongside past alumni such as Jackie and Jessica Chulya. More recently she has consistently challenged for the top spot in her Flight, usually aiming for (and often achieving) the lowest gross score from any of the girls in a given tournament. However, as Head of Golf at Shrewsbury, Shaun Meaney notes, Jan has done much more for golf at SHB than contribute low scores. She has also become a role model for the team, inspiring younger players to aim for the same level of success that she has achieved. Jan works very hard at the practice range and in the gym but she also realizes the importance of her academic studies; it is not uncommon for her to be explaining the finer complexities of quantitative economic models to her fellow students.

Jan’s spot on the SHB Golf team sheet will be a very difficult one to fill, but our loss is certainly University of Illinois’ gain. We wish you huge amounts of success Jan!

When it was time to leave the centre we all got together for a group photo. We were all really sad to leave. We had so much fun spending time with the children, but it made us all realise how lucky we were to have so many nice things whilst these children have so little. Since we’ve been back at school we decided to try and donate more to people who are less fortunate than us, like the children in the Mercy Centre. We will be selling products from the Mercy Centre shop at our stall in the Morris Forum on Monday 9th December. Please come along and buy some Christmas presents to support a really worthy cause.
