Maybe you need to refresh your resume. Perhaps you may want to brush up on your interviewing skills. Here are a few tips that may assist you in meeting your goal of career development. • Ask yourself, “What are my career goals?” Make a point to sit down and really decide if you are happy with the direction of your career. • Research, Research, Research. Actively explore your field of choice by searching different websites and even speaking with those employed in your perspective field. • Begin the job search. Utilize the internet and job search engine sites. Look for careers and jobs that are in the field of your interest. • Develop or update your resume. Your resume is the employer’s first glimpse of you. You want to make a great first impression. The goal is for your resume to stand out from everyone in the pack. • Prepare for the interview. Make certain that you are familiar with the company you are interviewing with. Be certain to know every aspect of the position for which you have applied. Know how your qualifications and experience match up to the job. • Give thanks. Always send the person or person’s you’ve interviewed with a thank you letter. A simple note of thanks can go a long way. We are in the age of technology and an email is fine. However, a mailed thank you letter is great too. Thank you emails or letters should be sent off no later than two days after the interview. Tackling your career development can be a scary process. Yet, just like revamping your look it can give you a completely different outlook on life. 40
