A scientific study proved the connection between health and relationships called the Roseto Effect. It compared the rate of heart disease in Italian-Americans living in Roseto, PA with two (2) other communities. The three communities shared the same risk factors for heart disease. Over 50 years, researchers observed a connected, tightknit, family-oriented, and loving community in Roseto. The rate of coronary heart disease was less than half of the other communities during the first 30 years. Yet, the sense of community weakened in the 1960's and 1970s. The rate of heart disease rose to the same levels as the other communities. 27
