to know they can go to college and they’ll have better opportunities for jobs because of their skills. That is what I want to teach them.” Originally from Colombia, Roth came to the United States when she was 18. She attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University to learn English to better communicate with her husband and give her opportunities in work and life. “My husband didn’t speak Spanish and I didn’t speak English, so that was a little hard,” Roth said. “But we got married anyways and we figured it out.” Now married 34 years, Roth and her husband have three children and one grandchild. She started her teaching career in Denison, before coming to Sherman. She also spent four years as a national curriculum coordinator before returning to teach in Sherman. “I’ve always been faithful to Sherman ISD, especially Washington Elementary,” Roth said. “I couldn’t do any of this without my parents, my kids, or our administration.” As the Texas bilingual educator of the year, Roth is the Texas nominee for the National Association for Bilingual Education Teacher of the Year competition. “This is such an amazing experience for Ms. Roth and Sherman ISD because our students will reap the benefits from her amazing teaching,” Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Susan Horowitz said. “This also gives Ms. Roth and Sherman ISD an opportunity to be seen as a leader in bilingual education.” Roth was recognized at the TABE Teacher of the Year awards luncheon Oct. 21 in Galveston. The national bilingual Teacher of the Year winner will be selected in February at the NABE conference in Dallas. “I think we are going to win,” Roth said. “I’m very proud and I am looking forward to letting everyone know we are from Sherman ISD.” 17
