where his father formerly taught, and he graduated
from Sherman High School in 2000.
As a child, Stoker saw the beginnings of the Building
Bearcats idea through his family’s involvement in
education. As the first African-American school
board member in Denton ISD, Stoker’s father pushed
for equity and excellence for all students while
continuing his work at Sherman High School, teaching
government.
“My parents influenced my decision to become an
educator. My father is a long-time educator and
contributor to the profession,” Stoker said. “My mother
served as a school board member in Sherman, and
continuously encouraged me during my pursuit of
higher education.”
Stoker received that support and encouragement not
only from his family, but also from his teachers.
“Coach Hunt was a wonderful teacher,” Stoker said.
“He would talk about producing quality work and being
responsible for your actions. Many positive lessons
were learned because of Coach Hunt. I see him as one
of many great teachers I had as a Bearcat.”
For Stoker, carrying on the Building Bearcats tradition
is a given.
“Quality instruction makes the most difference when
you think in terms of being able to obtain academic
success. Our goal as educators is to ensure our
students have the necessary skills for college and
future careers” Stoker said. “So, I hope to continue
the Building Bearcats tradition through ensuring
that our kids have access to remarkable educational
experiences and supportive educators as we strive for
academic excellence for all in SISD.”
It’s clear in the advice he has for future Bearcats, that
he is not only an excellent example of a Bearcat, but
also one that came back and will build more.
“Wherever you are, make a positive impact,” he said.
“Work to develop supportive relationships, be humble,
dream big, exhibit perseverance, set measurable goals
and track your progress. Be grateful for all that you
have, and thank your teachers everyday for all they
do.”
