university news HIGHLIGHTS ARTS & SCIENCES BUSINESS CONSERVATORY NURSING HEALTH PROFESSIONS PHARMACY PERFORMANCES ATHLETICS Children’s illustrator Henry Cole received a President’s Medal from President Tracy Fitzsimmons at this summer’s Children’s Literature Conference. Elizabeth White accepted the position of registrar, effective September 16. White has served as interim registrar since July 2012; previously, she was assistant registrar. “Elizabeth brings a wealth of knowledge of the academic and administrative aspects of this position along with a track record of working effectively with individuals and offices across the university,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Adrienne Bloss, Ph.D. “We are fortunate to have her supporting Shenandoah in this important role.” Blackboard Systems Administrator Melissa Stange received a Key to the Community award at the 2013 BbWorld Conference this summer. She was also selected as one of 12 clients to participate in the MvBb (Most Valuable Blackboarder) program. Two students from Nepal, Kriti Hada and Sapana Ojha, began their studies at Shenandoah University this fall as scholarship recipients chosen during the Global Citizenship Project trip to Nepal last March. ARTS & SCIENCES Shenandoah hosted its 28th Annual Children’s Literature Conference, “Heavy Medal: Celebrating Electrifying Literature.” Approximately 25,000 new children’s books are published each year, but only a select few garner prestigious publishing awards. Attendees interacted with Caldecott Medal illustrators and New York Times best-selling children’s authors, and participated in roundtable discussions with the U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate. Freshman core studies major Joshua Stamp of Chesapeake, Va., was named 4 one of two $10,000 2013 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) High School Sullivan Award winners at a halftime ceremony at the AAU Super Showcase broadcast of ESPNU in July at the Disney ESPN Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The Sullivan award is considered the country’s premier athletic award honoring high school amateur athletes for excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community. In his acceptance speech, Stamp expressed his pride in representing Shenandoah University and “…becoming a Hornet.” BUSINESS M.B.A. student Justin Marsh received one of two $2,000 national American Rental Association (ARA) schol arships for the 2013-2014 school year. “The scholarship will make my MBA much more affordable, further reinforcing the value of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International accredited Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business,” said Marsh, who is employed by the United Rentals in Winchester. “The affordability, AACSB-International accredited recognition and professionalism of the Byrd School are what attracted me to Shenandoah University.” Freshman business administration student Andre Lake of Laurel, Md., and his younger sister, Tamila, each received $5,000 Folds of Honor Scholarships this summer from Budweiser as children of the late Sergeant First Class Floyd D. Lake, who died in the line of duty on January 20, 2007, while on a reconnaissance mission in the northeast “Al Jadidah” region of Iraq.
