EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ’ S MESSAGE

We ’ re Planning for a Fruitful 2017

Wilma Agnew SMCAA Executive Director

Welcome to our second annual Sheet Metal Works publication . It ’ s hard to believe that we are already into 2017 and the association is busier than ever . The SMCAA had its first provincial board meeting in January to welcome our new board members , discuss issues surrounding our industry and plan for 2017 . Our new president , Tony Borsje , with Radius Mechanical in Edmonton , is quite eager to be at the helm and I know that his goals for the association are to see much more growth in 2017 . At the meeting we welcomed our new vice-president , Brock Grolla , with Trotter & Morton in Calgary . Brock has been on the board since 2014 . We would also like to welcome Stan Northam , with Stanama Heating of Eckville , back onto the board for 2017 / 18 . Stan has been a board member on and off since 2002 with his last term being in 2014 . Stan returns this term as the treasurer .

As you can see by the articles in this year ’ s publication , SMCAA , its board and committee members have been very busy ensuring that the HVAC trade remains relevant and that our members ’ needs are met ,
and your voices are heard .
In 2016 we were excited to have lobbied the Building Technical Council to have HVAC representation on the Building Sub-Council . This position is important for our industry as it provides you a voice on the council that deals directly with the HVAC trade and will make sure that the trade is protected and that any issues with building codes are dealt with by experienced HVAC contractors . We thank Terene Tharagan of Aspen Heating in Calgary who was appointed to the position in 2016 .
Both Calgary and Edmonton have in place a technical liaison committee that meets monthly with their respective city inspectors to discuss issues plaguing the trade within their own municipalities . The committees have tackled issues such as the A / R Seer ratings , the new Energy Code , the building codes and the use of furnaces as temporary heat in new construction . If there are issues that you are dealing with as a contractor / supplier or wholesaler , please let us know so that we can help and be your voice .
We would like to provide this service to other jurisdictions throughout Alberta but volunteers are need-
