SMCAA , its board and committee members have been very busy ensuring that the HVAC trade remains relevant and that our members ’ needs are met , and your voices are heard .

Our industry had another important success in January 2016 when the SMCAA met with the Alberta Industry Training board chair and voiced our concerns with regards to the proposed sheet metal curriculum . Thankfully , that curriculum was annulled and sent back to the drawing board for revision .
Through hard work and appeals , the Sheet Metal PAC in support of the Gas PAC / LAC voted in favour this past December to agree that sheet metal journeymen will have enough hours to earn their Gas B ticket . This means that starting in 2017 sheet metal students in Alberta will receive not only their sheet metal ticket but also their gas ticket . This accomplishment could not have happened without the support of Mike Vader of NAIT and Duane Sylvester of SAIT , the sheet metal PAC / LAC members and the gas PAC / LAC members . The SMCAA thanks you for all your hard work and dedication to our trade .
In 2016 the SMCAA awarded 10 scholarships of $ 500 each to employees of SMCAA members . The board of directors at their January 2017 meeting passed a motion to award another 10 scholarships worth $ 500 each again . The deadline for applications is May 5 , 2017 . Any employee of a SMCAA member is qualified to apply . The scholarship is for all apprentices from first to fourth years .
