here were big signs stating that you needed to have on
a bathing suit to use the Splash Pad. Only the kids had
suits on, but I could not resist ducking under a few water
spouts just to get some wet and welcome relief from this
oppressive heat. Immediately, an attendant came out to
say, “NO SUIT, NO SPLASH!” Seriously, m’aam, it’s 105 in the shade and
we are the only people here! She must have been from up North, because she obviously had not heard of Southern hospitality! Meanwhile
on the river, the water was very high and fast moving due to the previous night’s drencher. My dad and my brother were in one canoe and
got tangled up in branches on the edge of the river. They tipped over,
both losing hats, their eye glasses, and Dad’s hearing aids. My husband
tried to help and in the process lost his hat and brand new eye glasses.
So the whole sweaty, soggy, half blind and deaf bunch made it back to
the house for a wonderful meal in our nice, cool house. Thank God for
air conditioning! We played games, did crafts, ate too much and had
a wonderful time, laughing about our mis-adventures and wondering
how people live here in the summer!
After relinquishing four pair of eyeglasses, three hats, and one set of
hearing aids to the waters of South Carolina, we all hugged and kissed
goodbye until next time we would meet in South Carolina (which would
not be until August, unless it was at the beach!). Now that my husband
and I live here full-time, we have learned our way around and adjusted
to dark country roads with no street lights and hot, humid summers.
We have gladly traded the two months of “stuck in the house” heat
and humidity for the nine months of “stuck in the house” cold, ice, and
snow. We have learned to go out and do yard work and errands in the
morning, and then retreat to the AC in the heat of the day. The North is
a nice place to visit (especially in July and August), but I would never
want to live there again. My blood has thinned out; I’m learning to take
it slow and easy with a nice, tall glass of iced tea and I’m here to stay,
even in the good old summertime!
