PASSION feature Story by Ashley Elvington • Laura McBryde Photography PUPPY Love S OME SAY DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND. For Stephanie Moore, however, it’s animals. “For as far back as I can remember, our family took in strays. We got my first cat, Tinker Bell, from the Florence Area Humane Society when I was in the second grade. The first dog I remember was Dutchess, a Doberman mix that wandered into our yard.” Young Stephanie also volunteered alongside her mom at Humane Society adoption events. And, although they couldn’t save them all, she and her family were able to help over 100 dogs and many more cats during her childhood.   While she has rescued rabbits, birds, squirrels, cats, turtles and even a few pigs, there is no animal that touches Stephanie’s heart quite like a dog. “They are meant to be companion animals, loyal till their last breath. In their eyes, you can see happiness and sadness, pain and fear. And, seeing a dog sleep in a soft bed after being on a concrete floor or at the end of a chain, you see relief and gratitude. A dog knows when it has been rescued.” 112 FEBUARY 2016 SHEMAGAZINE.COM
