o say that Savannah Dynan has had quite an interesting
journey in her 18 years would be an understatement. Yet,
with each challenge presented before her, she triumphs and
never lets her circumstances hold her back in life.
Despite having been born with autism, Savannah admits
that she had a very happy childhood, thanks in large part to her loving family. This constant source of encouragement and support was truly needed, as
Savannah entered therapy at a young age where she remained until the 9th
grade. “My family is what is most important to me… They understand me.
I struggled, and still struggle, with speaking and motor coordination. I also had
behavioral problems as a child. Having autism was and still is hard for both me
and my family, but I have come a long way.”
Her mom Beth shares, “Our journey with autism has not always been easy,
but it has definitely been rewarding. There are many things that parents may
take for granted or not fully appreciate, but that is not the case with autism.
I remember the first time Savannah told a lie. She was about 6 or older. I was
actually happy… It meant that she was understanding the perspective of
others. I am so fortunate that she has come so far. She has worked very hard.
There have also been many ‘angels’ along our way. I am so thankful to them.”
A defining word for this beautiful young lady is sweet, though her
compassion for others runs deep. “I choose to describe myself as sweet
because I care about other people, and their misfortunes make me sad.
I understand that there are worse things that can happen other than autism.”
Beth adds, “I could not agree with that any more. Savannah is a very sweet and
thoughtful person. I feel blessed to have her in my life.”
Savannah’s family and friends motivate her to live a happy and successful
life. Savannah is doing that and more, as she continues to make plans for her
future. Currently, she is working on developing her skills in cosmetology and
hopes to one day work in a salon. She also dreams of earning a college degree
and getting her driver’s license. Her greatest wish of all, however, is to make
a difference in the lives of others. “I want to encourage people to help others
with autism or any other disability. I have overcome many obstacles and believe that others can too, even if they have a disability or not. I would love to
make life better for those with disabilities and various diversities through job
opportunities, awareness, and understanding.” Two other inspirations in
Savannah’s life are her teachers, Ms. Sara and Mr. Lee. “Mr. Lee, my 8th grade
science teacher, is one of my heroes. He made you feel special.”
