07 Annual Report for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2016 Smarter Sewer The Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) is an investment to upgrade our aging sewer infrastructure, better ensure we are ready for an earthquake, and prepare us for challenges related to climate change. Phase One of SSIP is investing over $2.9 billion across 70 projects to improve and upgrade our collection system, treatment facilities and stormwater management efforts. Our Southeast Treatment Plant (SEP), built in 1952, treats 80% of the City’s wastewater and is a key focus of our Phase One investments. The design is underway for our Biosolids Digester Facilities Project, our flagship project. We are also advancing the New Headworks (Grit) Replacement Project. Phase One projects utilize cutting edge technology to ensure our operations remain seismically sound and reliable. New Green Infrastructure Projects help improve the efficiency of our sewer system by capturing and diverting stormwater away from our combined sewer system. They also help restore natural habitats, beautify neighborhoods and calm traffic. In addition to implementing the SSIP, we are also intent on being a good neighbor wherever we provide services. We are advancing plans to build a new Southeast Community Facility in the Bayview, creating a new home for community-based organizations and a hub of community resources. Public tours of the Southeast Plant are bringing new visitors to the neighborhood and raising awareness about the sewer system and its role in protecting public health and the environment. Our WSIP and SSIP Project Labor Agreements (PLAs), along with our Contractors Assistance Center, support jobs and contracting opportunities for local residents and firms. By ensuring our service area residents are connected to SFPUC supported apprenticeships, job referrals, and contracting opportunities, we’re creating a new generation of workers that are invested in and take stewardship of the city they call home.
