SFPUC - Annual Reports Sustaining What Matters | Page 8

07 Annual Report for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2014 New LED street lamp. Operating 24/7 We continue to invest in and prioritize key projects in the City of San Francisco to ensure the delivery of reliable services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Managing Our Aging Infrastructure Construction crews continue to upgrade portions of the Southeast Wastewater Treatment Plant. Built in 1952, much of the facility is operating well beyond its useful life, and structural elements of the plant are deteriorating. Work is in progress on the biosolids digesters—where solids are managed; the headworks—where flows first enter the plant; and on a new grit removal facility—to reduce grit scour and damage to treatment facilities. Pipe Repair and Replacement 240 blocks of pipe repair and replacement per year We will continue to increase the water and sewer pipeline replacement rate over the next three years. Lighting Up Our City In 2014, we replaced 119 outdated streetlight fixtures with new, modern poles and efficient light emitting diode (LED) lights. Our Wireless Controls Pilot Project also made progress, allowing us to remotely monitor and control our streetlights. We will begin replacement of 18,500 high-pressure sodium streetlights in 2015. These new LED streetlights with wireless controls, will improve neighborhood lighting and reduce maintenance costs. On average, we generate 1.6 billion kilowatt hours per year—enough energy to power about 421,053 homes in San Francisco for one year
