Water System Improvement Program

Sewer System Improvement Program
We continue to advance the work of Phase One of
the Sewer System Improvement Program – a $2.7
billion investment into our aging sewer system.

In 2014, eight Early Implementation
Projects are in design after extensive
public outreach in each of the City’s
eight watersheds.
A decade into this $4.8 billion program, we continue
our historic improvements to the Hetch Hetchy
Regional Water System. Construction is complete on
improvements to allow Bay Division Pipeline No. 3
to absorb up to six feet of movement should an
earthquake occur on the nearby Hayward Fault.
These projects will monitor
and track the effectiveness
of green infrastructure
technologies throughout
the City.
The Bay Tunnel was brought into service and the
New Irvington Tunnel achieved substantial completion
in 2014.
Upgrades to the Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant
on the Peninsula and the seismic retrofit of the last
San Francisco project, Sutro Reservoir, are expected
to reach substantial completion by the end of 2014.
Hetch Hetchy Water and Power Infrastructure
Improvements
Planning continues on the Hetchy System Improvement
Program, a capital program of upgrades to the aging
upcountry water and power facilities.
Work includes improvements to our three powerhouses,
two switchyards, three substations, as well as 170
miles of pipeline and tunnels, almost 100 miles of
