SFPUC - Annual Reports Sustaining What Matters | Page 3

Annual Report for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2014 San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (as of date of publication) Ann Moller Caen, President Francesca Vietor, Vice President Vince Courtney, Commissioner Anson Moran, Commissioner General Manager’s Message California is facing some of the driest years on record, while 2.6 million people depend upon us to deliver water each and every day. Conserving our highquality drinking water has always been an essential part of our culture. This year, we asked our customers to save even more. The SFPUC launched a nationally recognized public education conservation campaign, and our constituents have been responding to the call for a 10 percent reduction in water usage. To help customers striving to be better conservers, we launched My Account, an online tool to provide access to daily water usage data. Conservation alone is not enough. This year we moved projects forward aimed at providing droughtresistant water sources, such as groundwater and recycled water. More than a decade of research has gone into ensuring that we can safely and effectively diversify our supply without compromising the high quality of our water. Our investments in our water and sewer system infrastructure fortify our lifeline around the bay so that we can deliver water to your tap and treat wastewater even after a major seismic event. Strong and reliable infrastructure is what keeps our services running 24/7 and is also the backbone of a healthy economy. Our investments provide local jobs and training opportunities, enabling us to maintain a sustainable workforce and create the next generation of utility workers and environmental stewards. The dedicated people behind this infrastructure ensure the reliability of our services. We do this while making affordability a priority. Our tap water costs about one cent per gallon, and taking the water from our customers’ homes and businesses and cleaning it before discharge into the ocean or bay costs a little more than one cent per gallon. On behalf of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, I am pleased to present the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2014.
