Water Delivering high-quality water everyday. Annual Report for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2011 For over 77 years, we have delivered high-quality water by gravity to our San Francisco Bay Area customers through the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System. Since beginning operation, this system of pipelines, tunnels, pump stations, and water treatment plants that span 167 miles from the Sierra Nevada to the Bay has never failed to deliver water. Feature: Tesla Ultraviolet Treatment Facility Today, we are leading the way with our historic $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) – 81 projects to improve our system’s seismic resistance, and meet advanced water quality requirements and water supply needs. This year, WSIP reached the halfway point of construction, with program completion scheduled for 2016. New Facility Applies Disinfection Technology of the Future In 2011, our Tesla Ultraviolet Treatment Facility was brought online to provide advanced disinfection targeting biological pathogens ranging from bacteria and viruses to algae and protozoa. 2010-11 Milestones First Tunnel Under the Bay Construction of the 15-foot-diameter, 5-mile-long Bay Tunnel – the first tunnel underneath San Francisco Bay – began with the arrival and assembly of the specialized Earth Pressure Balanced Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The TBM will bore an average of 50 feet per day, at a depth of almost 100 feet under the Bay for the next 24 months. Launched this year, the project will ensure ongoing water delivery, even after a major earthquake or other natural disaster.
