SFPUC - Annual Reports Commitment | Page 10

Rain Garden on the Newcomb Model Block Annual Report for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2012 Environment Protecting Our Environment Protects Our Water Supply and our natural resources for future generations. Water is our lifeline, so it is essential to invest in the maintenance, preservation and restoration of our watershed ecosystems. Our investments conserve over 1.7 million acres in the Peninsula, Alameda County, and the Upper Tuolumne region. The protection of these vital assets helps us maintain the high quality of our drinking water and avoid costly filtration of our source water. Our watersheds protect endangered and native species while providing greater water reliability for our customers. Water can also be a destructive force when not properly managed. The SFPUC’s Sewer System Improvement Program will help address the problem of harmful pollutants from stormwater runoff taxing the San Francisco combined sewer system during heavy rain storms. To further manage stormwater, our Green Infrastructure projects help capture and slow down the water before it enters and damages our system, while simultaneously beautifying neighborhoods with green public spaces. In addition to m anaging stormwater, we safeguard our precious water supplies from climate change, drought and natural disaster by conserving our pure Hetch Hetchy drinking water and developing alternative local water supplies to meet our needs. We ask that you, our customers, support these efforts by conserving water and investing in rainwater harvesting or graywater systems at your home or business. Our combined efforts today will allow us to reliably serve you and the coming generations. 9 10
