The islands at Paris COP21: at the frontline of climate change but at the forefront of solutions

Islands at the frontline of climate change are “sentinels of climate change and large oceanic entities," a reality echoed by representatives from islands at COP21. Also emphasized was how addressing climate change impacts was a matter of national security, as people’s health, food and water supplies are at risk, as well as infrastructures and the islands’ physical and cultural integrity.

Climate change impacts are not only predicted: they are already being felt. Islands are devastated by storms, drought, sea level is already rising, and the ocean is getting more acidic, severely impacting people and economies.

But from poles to tropics, islands are not only victims they are innovative incubators already showcasing solutions, investing in natural solutions and turning to the use of renewable energies. Thus partnerships promoted in the Samoa pathway, regional planning and international support are clearly the way. Stating the crucial connection of the islands to the ocean, a call was made for ¨an Ocean challenge”.

Islands are compelling cases that nature is an ally. Although vulnerable they showcase ways towards a resilient world with smart nature-based solutions. Often overlooked as small states, countries and territories, islands are actually big oceanic players with big ideas, initiatives and actions. Island nations are at the frontline of climate change but at the forefront of solutions.
