This Season,

Eat Seasonally

For a healthy body and a healthy planet

ood production has one of the greatest impacts on our planet. An insurmountable

amount of energy is used to produce food and transport it to the end user-you. One way to make your food more “sustainable” is to eat seasonally. Eating seasonally means eating more of the foods that are growing at the same time that you eat them. For example, eating blueberries only in the summer during their growing season and not during winter when they are not in season. Here are 3 reasons why eating seasonally is better for you and our precious planet.

1. More nutrients! Foods that are in season are picked at their peak of ripeness because they do not need to travel far distances to the consumer. When fruits or vegetables are allowed to ripen on the mother plant, the result is not only a much better tasting food but also a food much higher in nutrients. You can easily find seasonally available foods at your local farmers market.

2. Promotes Sustainable-Farming Practices: Sustainable farming is the production of food using techniques that protect our planet. Readers of this magazine are well aware that nature is intelligent and has perfect systems in place. By eating seasonally, we are promoting the growing of foods during the times of year they grow best, as nature intended, thus resulting in less harmful fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and less energy needed to grow these foods!
