SEVENSEAS - 15

ake news is running rampant and mistrust in mainstream media outlets is greater than

ever. It is becoming harder and harder to distinguish fact from fiction. Science is an easy target for the spread of misinformation since many people lack the access or the desire to read the full transcripts of peer-reviewed journals while going about their busy days. For this reason, people trust the mainstream media to report on scientific findings which leads to sensationalized headlines and misinterpretations of findings. SEVENSEAS, though small, is a member of said media and we are here to assure everyone of our commitment to staying the course and doing right by our readers.

SEVENSEAS is a growing non-profit organization that believes in complete transparency. We are not owned by a media company and we do not accept money from anti-environmental sources. This allows us to remain our authentic selves and offer a trustworthy product each and every month.

SEVENSEAS is a non-profit community for anyone and everyone. Our hope is to connect people from all walks of life to encourage action and inspire the next generation of conservationists around the world. Just like no one person can solve all of our challenges in conservation, no one person can tell the complete, unbiased truth in a single magazine article. We recognized this since our start in 2015 which is why we give anyone with interest in marine conservation and travel a platform to publish.

SEVENSEAS pledges to stay out of the ugly, mud-slinging political process beyond environmental policy issues. We will never endorse a political candidate nor will we try to influence our readers’ opinions one way or the other during elections. Our job is to outline the impacts of policies and legislation, regardless of the politician or organization that proposed it. We will, however, encourage our readers to participate in their local political process, wherever that may be, because engaging with government is an act of conservation in and of itself.

In the same vein, we have and will continue to fact-check every piece we publish. SEVENSEAS is not a peer-reviewed journal, so it is up to our team of experts to check content for validity. Whether it is an opinion piece or a synopsis of a scientific study, whether it is about ocean plastics, the validity of human-related climate change, or a trip to Australia, we strive to make sure we are publishing fact-based information. We also pledge to own up to mistakes we might make in publishing something that isn’t quite right or information that might be outdated.

SEVENSEAS understands the importance of biodiversity in creating resilient ecosystems. We also understand the importance of diversity in daily life and in the sciences. Part of why we focus on travel in addition to marine conservation is the fact that travel can help people appreciate diversity and differing viewpoints. We hope that by publishing diverse content from all over the world, our readers will see how diverse our authors are and societal barriers will be diminished and eventually disappear from conservation and other sciences. Regardless of gender, nationality, skin color, socioeconomic status, occupation, sexuality, or ice cream preference, we want to make everyone feel like they can get involved in saving the world.

Most of all, SEVENSEAS pledges to remain a free resource for anyone and everyone. We promise to keep putting out new content and offering new programs for as long as people will be part of it and we can afford to keep the lights on. We promise to appreciate our readers and stay true to ourselves so you can trust that SEVENSEAS is a labor of love for the big blue planet that gives us life.
