The Marine Photobank is a leading visual resource that has galvanized people from all over the planet to collect, share and download marine photos, images and graphics that shed light on how humans have affected life in the ocean. The Marine Photobank was founded in response to a lack of readily available, high quality underwater and above water ocean conservation images. These images are available at no cost for non-commercial purposes as well as for media use.

Opposite page: I took a journalist interested in mangroves into a small lagoon where juvenile sharks could be found. Instead of finding sharks, we found a backhoe dredging a large sand spit across the lagoon. The work was being done without sediment traps and as we later found out, without permits. One mangrove shoot stood in the eventual path of the backhoe and I decided to get a shot of it standing tall - both condemned and yet defiant to the bitter end. Matthew D Potenski, MDP Photography/Marine Photobank Below: This shark died in the anti-shark nets off the beach front. It is being taken in by employees of the Natal Sharks Board, an organization that is paid to maintain the nets. Many unfortunate animals become entangled and die in the nets each year- including dolphins and sea turtles. Fiona Ayerst/Marine Photobank
