SEVENSEAS Marine Conservation & Travel Issue 12, May 2016 | Page 5

welve issues, hundreds of topics, thousands of readers, and constant outpour of support from the community. When I hatched the idea of SEVESEAS to promote marine conservation and ocean literacy it was very different from the pages in front of you now- but since this is a publication for the community, by the

community, a full year later, the magazine has evolved into a true resource for professionals, students, teachers, partners in the travel industry, and even those who never scratched the surface of marine conservation.

What else has happened in the last year? Unfortunately for our oceans the reports haven't been so great. Overflowing news, stories, and images of depleted fish stocks, poisoned seas, record breaking temperatures, and animals choked and strangled with plastic. We report on everything concerning marine conservation and try to focus on the positive, but with every issue, there is the underlying reality of the damage we are doing and how so few people even care. 50% of the Great Barrier Reef is dead, 93% is bleached and is feared to be dead in a matter of weeks. What will I have to report on the Great Barrier Reef in a few months? In a year? In a generation?

But Hope keeps us going. At SEVENSEAS we will continue to champion for our heros in marine conservation. The scientists, the researchers, the policy makers, the conservationists, the sustainable tour operators, the careful visitors, and we will continue to tell their stories and their successes. The fight to protect the oceans, biodiversity, and our humanity will never be over and it is a message that we will not tell quietly.

SEVENSEAS is the leading free publication that promotes marine conservation through community engagement, online media, and eco-tourism, with readers in 159 countries. We continue to inspire and educate all our readers through rich imagery, engaging content, and an underlying conservation message. From our inaugural issue we pledged to preserve SEVENSEAS as a free resource available to students, families, and professionals of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds. It is only by the generosity of donors and readers like you that we have the ability to make our mission a reality.

Cheers and Happy Swimming,
