needs to get back to Puerto Rico, and if you haven't been yet, you are long overdue. Born and raised there, I left the island ten years ago and I still discover loads of new things every time I go back. I always have a great time in old San Juan, as I imagine most people do - it's a unique part of town that has the ability to transport you to another era. There is plenty to do and see, from the famed fortress, government palace, colonial architecture, lots of local and designer shopping, and of course the characteristic cuisine which includes one of my all-time favorites, the famous chuletas kan kan (giant pork chops) and the traditional mofongo (Puerto Rican Style Plantains).

But when you ask me where my favorite parts of the island are to vacation, I have to say, hands down, the west coast! I come from a small town called Aguada, located in the western coastal valley region at the border of the Atlantic Ocean known for its beautiful beaches - this is also recognized as the site where Christopher Columbus entered the island of Puerto Rico on his second voyage in November 1493.

Few people visit the West Coast though it is such an easy and scenic car ride from San Juan along the coast. Upon arrival, the gleaming sun and hypnotic crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea remind you that you're in paradise where it hits 85 degrees just about any day of the year. On the West Coast, travelers need to remember a few “must see” places to visit:

1. Jobos beach is located in the town of Isabela, known for surfing and their laid back beaches. Enjoy amazing food, like a variety of empanadillas (fried turnovers) traditionally with beef or shredded chicken and tostones (fried plantains).

2. Aguadilla also offers a variety of stunning beaches, like the infamous Crash Boat, one the most popular, known for sapphire blue waters and ocean view dining. At this beach, you can see humpback whales, dozens of turtles and countless dolphins dancing in the waves. The downtown is charming with a picturesque seafront.

3. Rincón is proudly known as the capital of surfing! Many international surfing competitions are regularly held there. Rincón rose to international recognition through the 1968 World Surfing Championship, which was held at Domes and Maria's Beaches. Famed surfing beaches in town include Little Malibu, Tres Palmas, Maria's, Indicators, Domes, Pools, Sandy Beach, and Antonio's. The best time to surf is from November through March, but summer storms can also kick up the surf during the late summer.
